GRANTS TO PREPARE GEAR UP STUDENTS FOR
COLLEGE SUCCESS
Grants are part of the State’s College Preparation
Intervention Program
Annapolis, MD (February 26, 2007) -- The Maryland Higher
Education Commission is accepting proposals for grants under
a program aimed at preparing GEAR UP students for success in
college.
The grants, under the State’s College Preparation
Intervention Program (CPIP), will be awarded to institutions
of higher education to support eligible Maryland GEAR UP –
Focus on Math sites. Maryland GEAR UP (Gaining Early
Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a
federally funded early intervention program administered by
the Maryland State Department of Education.
“These grant projects will help ensure that the GEAR UP
students are prepared for a smooth transition from 8th grade
into high school. The emphasis on math education is
extremely important—math is the gatekeeper to success in
college,” said Paula Fitzwater, director of the Office of
Grants for the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
Approximately $750,000 will be awarded on a competitive
basis to eligible applicants. A technical assistance meeting
will be held March 30, 2007, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. A
networking lunch will be provided, and GEAR UP site
directors have been invited. The meeting and lunch will take
place at Anne Arundel Community College in the Johnson
Building, Room 105-107; directions are available at
http://www.aacc.edu/locationsandmaps/directions.cfm.
