GRANTS TO PREPARE GEAR UP STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE SUCCESS
Grants are part of the State’s College Preparation Intervention Program
Annapolis, MD (August 19, 2008) -- The Maryland Higher Education Commission is
accepting proposals for grants under a program aimed at preparing GEAR UP
students for success in college.
The grants, under the State’s College Preparation Intervention Program (CPIP),
will be awarded to institutions of higher education to support eligible Maryland
GEAR UP – Focus on Math sites. Maryland GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and
Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a federally funded early intervention
program administered by the Maryland State Department of Education.
“These grant projects will help ensure that the GEAR UP students, as tenth
graders, continue to receive the ongoing support and services necessary to
prepare them for postsecondary education,” said Paula Fitzwater, director of the
Office of Grants for the Maryland Higher Education Commission.
Approximately $750,000 will be awarded on a competitive basis to eligible
applicants. A technical assistance meeting will be held September 12, 2008, from
10:00 am to 1:00 pm. A networking lunch will be provided, and GEAR UP site
coordinators have been invited. The meeting and lunch will take place at the
Howard Community College Gateway Building, Room 3; directions are available at

Proposals are due October 15, 2008. Notification of grant awards will be made on
