The program is designed to provide individuals with the specific knowledge and skills necessary to design, operate, and supervise disability services support programs in higher education settings. Individuals will learn to respond to individual student needs while complying with applicable laws and rules. Additionally, individuals will learn skills of supervision and management necessary to successfully advocate for students and lead other professionals in post-secondary environments.

The proposed program in Disability Support Services in Higher Education meets these broad goals with a focus on developing professionals ready to lead in their discipline. Our candidates in the program will acquire skills as learning specialists and learn to advocate for the rights and needs of college students with disabilities. They will be able to employ myriad assistive technologies ranging from accommodations for students with physical disabilities to state-of-the-art software addressing learning needs of students with learning differences. Through developing an understanding of the intersection of disabilities and cultures, they will interact effectively with the diverse students who use disability services. Moreover, as leaders, our candidates will share their expertise in the field with various constituencies including families, administrators, and faculty. Finally, they will gain experience working with the leading professional association in postsecondary disability services (AHEAD) to use as a resource throughout their careers.
|
