Civil Engineering Program Description |
The Associate of Science (A.S.) in Civil Engineering will prepare students to transfer to a 4-yr institution for civil engineering. Civil Engineers design and supervise the construction of roads, buildings, airports, tunnels, dams, bridges, and water supply and sewage systems. They must consider various factors of the design process, including construction costs, the expected lifetime of the project, government regulations and potential environmental hazards, along with other elements. Graduates of the program will be able to demonstrate an understanding of kinematics of a particle and a rigid body; an understanding of kinetics concerning force and acceleration, work and
energy, impulse and momentum for a particle and a rigid body; an understanding of, and application for, force vectors; an understanding of equilibrium of a particle and a rigid body; an understanding of the basic concepts of thermodynamics; an understanding of mass and energy balance analysis for closed and open systems; an understanding of gas power cycles, vapor cycles, and combined power cycles; an understanding of stress and strain; an understanding of mechanical properties of materials; an understanding of axial loading, torsion, bending and transverse shear; an understanding of stress and strain transformations; design and conduct experiments, as well as analyze and interpret data; and apply the engineering design process.
|
