Archaeology Program Description
The area of concentration being proposed by SMCM will formalize a list of courses thatare currently being offered as part of the Anthropology degree. Currently, archaeology, one of the four subfields of anthropology, is an important component of the anthropologymajor at SMCM, and a number of courses focused on archaeology are regularly taughtas part of the curriculum. Of the thirty course offerings in the major, fourteen have anexplicitly archaeological or material culture emphasis. Archaeology, which at SMCMincludes the study of material culture in its broadest sense, is an inherentlyinterdisciplinary endeavor that emphasizes material literacy. Majors use archaeology toexplore, analyze, and interpret the material world humans have used to construct theirsocial and cultural realties. The creation of a concentration not only prepares studentsfor success in archaeology careers, it provides majors and other students with skills forengagement with a global material world.
