OOS Renewal - Landover  Program Description

Fortis College, an out-of-state institution, requests a five-year renewal of three existing associate degrees and five certificates (eight programs in all): A.S. in Dental Hygiene, A.S. in Medical Laboratory Technology, A.S. in Cyber Security and Forensics, Certificate in Expanded Functions Dental Assisting, Certificate in Medical Assisting, Certificate in Medical Billing and Coding, Certificate in Pharmacy Technician and Certificate in Computer and Network Support. Fortis College has proposed minor changes to four of the five certificate programs (credit hours only). The A.S. and Certificate in R & D Lab Technician has been discontinued due to declining enrollments. The College will no longer enroll new students but plans to continue teaching student who are currently enrolled in order that they may complete their degrees and certificates. No changes will be made to the remaining degree programs.

A.S. in Dental Hygiene prepares the individual for the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination and allows the graduate to take regional and state licensing exams to become a Registered Dental Hygienist (R.D.H.).

A.S. in Medical Laboratory Technology prepares students for positions in hospital, reference, physician and other related laboratories. Graduates are eligible to take the National Registry examinations.

A.S. in Cyber Security and Forensics is focused on providing skills in security analysis, designing and creating a secure system, troubleshooting security, using appropriate testing measures, conducting forensic documentation and development, implementation and maintenance of security policy.

Certificate in Expanded Functions Dental Assisting has been modified, resulting in an increase from 52 to 60 quarter credits. Students acquire skills and competency in an array of dental office procedures and laboratory techniques. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be eligible to take the Maryland Expanded Functions Examination to become nationally Certified Dental Assistants Pathway II.

Certificate in Medical Assisting has been modified, resulting in a decrease from 54.5 to 46 quarter credits. Students who complete the program will be qualified to assume entry-level positions and perform medical procedures, lab techniques and front office duties for physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors and optometrists.

Certificate in Medical Billing and Coding has been modified, resulting in an increase from 54.5 to 62 quarter credits. Graduates will be qualified to step into entry-level jobs such as data collection, documentation, diagnostic and procedural coding, etc. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the Certified Professional Coder Apprentice examination.

Certificate in Pharmacy Technician has been modified, resulting in a decrease from 53 to 46 quarter credits. Graduates in this field perform tasks to help prepare prescribed medications, count tablets and label prescription bottles. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Pharmacy Technician certification exam.

Certificate in Computer and Network Support has not been modified. Students will be able to achieve real world job skills, demonstrate competence in both the Windows Client and Windows Server environments, as well as achieve at least one industry recognized Microsoft Technology Specialist Certification.
