Loyola University, Maryland Green Initiatives


• Energy Management Plan
        o Passed by the President’s Cabinet in January 2009.
        o Heating & Cooling Temperature Set-points.
        o Nighttime energy set-backs.
        o Restrict energy hogs such as space heaters.

• Single Stream Recycling
        o All recyclables can go in same container.
        o Increases the options for what we can recycle.
        o On average the University recycles 35% of its waste.

• Recyclemania
        o For the past 3 years the University has participated in and topped Maryland in the per          capita category in the nation-wide Recyclemania contest.

• Sustainability Committee
        o Summer 2009 the University is creating a sustainability committee comprised of students, faculty and administrators.
        o The committee will lead the sustainability program to the next level & launch a campaign to help change the behaviors of the University community members.

• Water Conservation
        o Low-flow shower heads
        o Energy star washers

• “Green” Residence hall
        o Living roof
        o Takes advantage of geothermal energy
        o Recycled materials used in construction

• Dining Services
        o Recyclable “to go” containers
        o “Trayless” dining
        o Local food options
        o Farmer’s market on the quad during peak growing seasons
        o Organic and fair trade options

• Carbon footprint
        o A company has been contracted to help the University determine its carbon footprint & determine where there are areas for improvement.
