Bowie State University Green Initiatives

Bowie State University is deeply concerned about the unprecedented scale and speed of global warming and its potential for large-scale, adverse health, social, economic and ecological effects. Additionally, the University recognizes the scientific consensus that global warming is real and largely caused by humans. Further, Bowie State recognizes the need to reduce the worst impacts of global warming and to help re-establish the more stable climatic conditions that have made human progress possible over the last 10,000 years.

To this end, as president of Bowie State University, I established the Climate Commitment Coordinating Committee (C4) to initiate the development of a comprehensive plan to achieve climate neutrality on campus within the very near future.  Listed below are a few C4 activities that have been initiated:

Annual Earth Day program that focuses on new GREEN initiatives designed to implement and help educate the Bowie State campus community

Annual Carbon Footprint Inventory of the campus to help BSU measure the amount of carbon emissions produced; and to assist the University in its efforts to alleviate carbon emissions throughout campus

Recycling program implemented in all academic buildings and several auxiliary buildings;  commingle recycling bins were placed throughout the buildings

Additionally, C4 has agreed to enter Bowie State in the national Recycle Mania competition. Our residence halls will compete to determine which ones can collect the most bottles, cans and white paper products.

C4 members consist of the following:

Karl Brockenbrough, Chair

Patricia Hughes

Steven Sheffield

Cornelia Brooks
