What & Why: The Student
Advisory Council (SAC) to the Maryland Higher Education
Commission (MHEC) was created in 1988 in response to a
legislative directive. The purpose of the Student Advisory
Council is to advise the Maryland Higher Education
Commission on the concerns, perspectives, and experiences of
the students attending Maryland institutions.
Mission/Goals: The
mission of the Student Advisory Council is to ensure a
student voice is provided to the Maryland Higher Education
Commission on the issues in Maryland higher education.
The key goals of the Maryland Higher Education Commission
and the Student Advisory Council are:
- Quality and Effectiveness
Maintain and strengthen a preeminent statewide
system of postsecondary education recognized nationally
for its academic excellence and effectiveness in
fulfilling the educational needs of students and the
State.
- Access and Affordability
Achieve a system of postsecondary education that
promotes accessibility and affordability for all
Marylanders.
- Diversity
Ensure equal educational opportunity for Maryland's
diverse citizenry.
- A Student-Centered Learning System
Strengthen and expand teacher preparation programs
and support a student-centered, preK-16 educational
system to promote student success at all levels.
- Economic Growth and Vitality
Promote economic growth and vitality through the
advancement of research and the development of a highly
qualified workforce.

Student Service Award
The Student
Service Award recognizes one student out of all Maryland
students who has shown outstanding service to both their
community and institution.

Website Redesign
The Student Advisory Council is currently working on redesigning its
website to make it a more effective and informative
resource for Maryland students.
