Bowie State University

Bowie State University originated in Baltimore, Maryland in 1865. The institution is grounded in the knowledge that education is freedom. As the oldest Historically Black University in Maryland and one of the oldest in the nation, Bowie State has helped and continues to guide its students to prepare successfully for a lifetime of learning and productive citizenship. Currently, the university offers 20 undergraduate majors, 20 master degree programs, and two doctoral programs. The university prides itself in challenging its students with rigorous studies in the liberal arts as it emerges as one of Maryland's leaders in infusing technology into teaching and learning. Bowie State provides quality education and research in science, engineering, mathematics, and other related areas. Additionally, building on its history as one of Maryland's leaders in teacher education, Bowie State offers doctoral study in Educational Leadership. The first 16 doctoral recipients earned the Ed.D in Educational Leadership in Spring 2005. Bowie's programs are designed to enable students to think critically, value diversity, become effective leaders, function competently in a highly technical world, and pursue advanced graduate study.
