Montgomery Montessori Institute Green
Initiatives
Montgomery Montessori Institute (MMI) shares its campus with
The Franklin Schools comprised of Franklin Montessori School and
Franklin Country Day Montessori School. Since the property's
indoor and outdoor spaces benefit all programs, we work together
as a community toward environmental literacy and green
initiative efforts. This year, The Franklin Schools
"branched-out" with the launch of their "Tree-mendous Project!"
With guidance from their teachers, the children ages two through
six leafed through books and magazines to select trees
appropriate for the climate and topography of MMI's and
Franklin's outdoor domain.
Our junior arborists, with donations from their families, are
making possible the addition of thirteen new "family trees" to
our campus. The teachers have had many discussions and
tree-related activities with the children noting how trees help
the environment and how they can hold special meaning in our
lives.
We have shared the following poem by Naturalist, Karen I. Shragg
with our Franklin families:
Think Like a Tree
Soak up the sun
Affirm life's magic
Be graceful in the wind
Stand tall after a storm
Feel refreshed after it rains
Grow strong without notice
Be prepared for each season
Provide shelter to strangers
Hang tough through a cold spell
Emerge renewed at the first signs of spring
Stay deeply rooted while reaching for the sky
Be still long enough to
hear your own leaves rustling.
We are also proud to have our campus be designated by the
National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat.
Attached are two photos from our fall tree planting. We
anticipate planting additional trees on Arbor Day, Friday, April
24, 2009.
