Higher Education in Maryland

The Child Care Provider Scholarship Program has been consolidated into the Workforce Shortage Student Assistance Grant Program.  Individuals who have received the Child Care Provider Scholarship in prior years will continue to receive their awards as long as they remain eligible.  Award amounts will remain the same and the service obligation must be served.

Child development program or early childhood education program.

You and your parents (if you are a dependent student) must be Maryland residents. You must enroll at a two-year or four-year Maryland college or university as a full-time (12+ credits per semester) or part-time (6-11 credits per semester), degree-seeking undergraduate. Audited courses cannot be used to reach the minimum credit hours required for full-time or part-time status. You must enroll in a child development program or an early childhood education program. You may only attend part-time if you are working at least 15 hours a week at a child care or family day care center.

This award is not based on need.

FOR RENEWALS ONLY.  An award for full-time attendance at a community college is $1,000 per year; a part-time award is $500 per year. An award for full-time attendance at a four-year institution is $2,000 per year; a part-time award is $1,000 per year. The total dollar amount of all State awards may not exceed your cost of attendance as determined by your school’s financial aid office or $19,000, whichever is less. Funds may not be available to award all eligible students.

Your award may be renewed if you maintain satisfactory academic progress at the college you attend, maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA, and remain enrolled in an approved program. You and your parents must also remain Maryland residents. The award may be renewed for up to an additional three years.

You must agree to complete an education program in early childhood education or child development and be employed as a director or senior staff member of a licensed Maryland child care center or as a family day care provider in Maryland on a full-time basis one year for each year, or portion thereof, you receive the award.

NOTE:  Teaching in a public school in Maryland will not fulfill the service requirement, nor will teaching as a kindergarten teacher.  You must begin employment within six months of your graduation.  If you do not meet your service obligation, your scholarship must be repaid with interest.  If you hold this scholarship with any other award requiring a service obligation, you must perform your service in consecutive years.

All new awards made in this major or occupational fields will now be made under the Workforce Shortage Student Assistance Grant Program.  Please visit our website for information on the WSSAG program and for program application information.
