The State Nursing
Scholarship and Living Expenses Grant Program has been
consolidated into the Workforce Shortage Student
Assistance Grant Program. Individuals who have received the
State Nursing Scholarship in prior
years will continue to receive their awards as long as they
remain eligible. Award amounts will remain the same and the
service obligation must be served.
Enrollment

You and your parents
(if you are a dependent student) must be Maryland residents. You must have a

graduate student in a program leading to a degree in nursing. Audited

full-time or part-time status.
The State Nursing
Scholarship is not based on need.
RENEWALS ONLY.
The nursing
scholarship is for the amount of tuition and mandatory fees up to $3,000 per
year.
Students enrolled in an accelerated nursing program that includes mandatory
summer academic sessions can be awarded the amount of tuition and fees not
to exceed $4,500 per calendar year. Summer funding requests must be in
writing and be received by The Office of Student Financial Assistance by April 1 of each year. You may hold the
State Nursing Scholarship with other State awards,
but the total dollar amount of all State awards may not exceed the cost of
attendance as determined by your school’s financial aid office or $19,000,
whichever is less.
Your award will be
renewed automatically if you and your parents are Maryland residents; you maintain a minimum 3.0 annual GPA in your
college course work; remain enrolled in an eligible program; and, maintain the
satisfactory academic progress standards of your institution.
You must agree to sign a promissory note with the Maryland Higher
Education Commission that states he/she will fulfill the nursing service
obligation. The obligation requires the recipient to serve as a nurse on a
full-time basis, one year for each academic year, or portion thereof,
tuition assistance was received; or on a part-time basis, two years for each
academic year, or portion thereof, tuition assistance was received.
Full-time employment is defined as 35 or more hours per week.
Part-time employment is defined as 20-34 hours per week by the employment
agency. The
service must be completed at an eligible Maryland organization and must
begin within six months of graduation. An eligible organization is defined
as a licensed hospital, public health agency, nursing home, home health
agency or adult day care center which is authorized by the Secretary of
Health and Mental Hygiene. Employment as a nurse at a health maintenance
organization (HMO) or a physician's private office does not meet the service requirement. If the
service obligation is not met, the award must be repaid with interest.
If you
hold this scholarship with any other award requiring a service obligation,
you must perform your service in consecutive years.
All
new awards made in these majors
or occupational fields will now be made under the Workforce Shortage Student
Assistance Grant Program. Please visit our website for
